Patent Counsel Akzo Nobel Pharma

“After a long employment the patent administrator of the pharmaceutical division of Akzo Nobel, including the Organon International (drugs), Intervet (veterinarian products) and Organon Teknika (diagnostic products), retired at the end of 1991. In April 1992 Dirk van Buren succeeded him with the explicit assignment to automate the “manual” patent administration system into a computer-based system. This system consisted of all formal  procedures regarding submission and continuation of patent applications in various countries (including deadline administration and the administration related to the patent maintenance fees). His first priority was the conversion of the maintenance fees administration system into a computerized system. Especially in the beginning, there were extensive contacts with the external company that supplied the software. After it was concluded that the new fee administration met all internal needs and turned out to be a reliable and workable system, he also computerized the rest of the patent administration (e.g. submission of first filings, foreign filing, international (PCT) filing, the ensuing regional and/or national filing, monitoring of the government deadlines, and more).

“All actions that where necessary for the conversion of a complete manual system into a computer-based system, were directed by Dirk van Buren in an accurate, professional and reliable manner to the full satisfaction of his clients”.

“For years and to the full satisfaction of the company, Van Buren made his ‘administrative contribution’ to the work of the patent attorneys of Akzo Nobel Pharma’s patent department, with the help of the new administration system that he installed himself. This department was closed down because of the organizational break-up of the patent activities of Organon and Intervet and projected sale of Organon Teknika in 2001”.
